What Type of Termites Are Found In Townsville?
1. Coptotermes acinaciformis (subterranean termite)
This is one of Australia’s most destructive subterranean termite species.
They build large colonies underground (or at the base of trees), then tunnel through soil and timber.
Because you’re in Charters Towers / Townsville region, this species is very relevant (sub-tropical / tropical climate).
Key behaviour: they need contact (or at least connection) with moist soil, so any building timber in contact with soil/moisture is at risk.
2. Schedorhinotermes intermedius (subterranean termite)
Another highly destructive subterranean species found in Queensland and known for infesting homes.
Example: A Townsville-area pest control site mentions Schedorhinotermes intermedius as common and destructive in the region.
Example risk: under building slabs, in root-systems under houses, etc.
3. Mastotermes darwiniensis (giant northern termite)
This species is more limited in distribution (tropical northern Australia) but the materials say it also occurs in northern parts of Queensland.
It’s considered extremely destructive, attacks live trees, timber, even non-wood materials in some cases.
